about
This song was written to tell the story of the traveling musician... specifically the ones that are just scraping by. It is a distilling of stories from myself and many other musicians that I have shared a stage with, woven into a single story. If you've ever played a 3-hour gig, in a bar full of people that have never heard of you, then you get it.
lyrics
I’ll Be Gone – by Chris Mullen
I spent the night in Moab after a fourteen-hour drive
Woke up when the tent got hot. Ate a burger from last night
The scenery doesn’t get to me like it did at the end of May
I’ve got two-hundred miles to my last show, then I’m coming back your way
I’ve spent more time slinging this gear than I have at the microphone
But you’ve got to be heard over the barroom noise. I’m wishing I was home
If I can just sell five more discs, I can make it to Trinidad
My cousin Nick can hook me up. He’s got a camper parked out back
And I said “Hi. It’s nice to meet you. Here’s my song
After our ninety-minute friendship, I’ll be gone”
“You sounded great” she says to me
I smile and tell her “Thanks”
If compliments were combustible, then I could fill up my gas tank
Sometimes it’s hard with all the noise to make anybody see
A troubadour with a vintage trunk filled with t-shirts and CDs
We all say “Hi. It’s nice to meet you. Here’s my song
After our ninety-minute friendship, I’ll be gone”
Some nights we can’t find the magic
Some nights this just feels like baggage
But some nights the whole world sings along
It keeps me moving on
“Hi. It’s nice to meet you. Here’s my song
After our ninety-minute friendship, I’ll be gone”
